There are films that everyone should see. And there are films that certain folk are compelled to share with others. Some could be hidden gems and others could be familiar films but underrated for the wrong reasons. And others still are well known classics that must be reinforced and understood for its past, modern, and post-modern contexts.
These are films I watch on repeat without fatigue and will not stop referring to. Many of these films are often about creative industries in the meta nature of making movies and music, and others are often exhibiting concepts and philosophies I would want to implement and inject into society if I ever had the influence to mold it. Much like the Gospel. Credit to Ryan Pressman for coining the term.
Within the following weeks when I’m dry on ideas or just need a break from the break of writing something completely of the cuff you might find me waxing poetic on one of these flicks…
Rockers (1978) - dir. Theodoros Bafaloukos
CQ (2001) - dir. Roman Coppola
F For Fake (1973) - dir. Orson Welles
24 Hour Party People (2002) - dir. Michael Winterbottom
Easy Rider (1969) - dir. Dennis Hopper
Avanti (1972) - dir. Billy Wilder
Chef (2014) - dir. Jon Favreau
Living in Oblivion (1995) - dir. Tom DiCillio
Duck You Sucker (1971) - dir. Sergio Leone
Zorba The Greek (1964) - dir. Michael Cacoyannis
All My Lovin’ (1968) - dir. Tony Palmer
It could be down to the philosophy of the film, the filmmaker, the vibe, the meta narrative behind the making of the scenes, or perhaps the unique originality and concept that is seldom examined. It could also be one of those instagram-esque posts of “yourself in five movies” kind of thing. I’ll try my best to not get to preachy (hehe), with the subject material. After all the reality is that I will ultimately care way more about this these flicks than you will. Its okay. It’s what makes us who we are.
It seems like real tease to talk about the concept of a gospel movie and not discuss one of these here on the spot. So sorry about that. But it would also be a good idea to watch one of them more recently to further enhance the literary quality of these entries. I know would want more than “Watch these movies, I think there good. Why don’t people watch movies no more?” But perhaps I might have struck a nerve of recognition in peering into one of these movies and much like myself, you may have to do a little prep work and then decide if I’m completely full of it. So it looks like I should get back to it. Have a good weekend.
